Why you know exactly what’s wrong and still can’t change.

What if the reason you're still a chronic procrastinator isn't because you don't realize that there's a problem, but because you've mistaken awareness of the problem for solving it?

Trust me I understand exactly how you're feeling. You are so self aware, especially compared to most other people. You know your patterns, you know that they're destructive, you know exactly why you should be doing what you're not doing… but it's just not enough to get you to start doing it.

You assume you're just not good enough. Not disciplined enough. Not enough.

But that's not true.

Most chronic procrastinators who are highly ambitious and goal-oriented can explain their patterns in extreme detail. It's the same extreme detail they use for their big goals and all of the things that they want to accomplish.

But when it comes to the things with no deadlines and no external expectations, when there's nothing pushing you to get it done, then you're just trapped in this endless cycle of constantly wanting to do it but not letting yourself do it. And you are painfully aware of that pattern.

The insight you have reveals the gap between where you are and where you want to be, but does nothing to build the skills to actually cross it.

And until you accept that fact you will continue spinning your wheels for the next month, year, five years, or even a decade, just like the past month, year, five years, or decade.

I've noticed that the online personal development world usually treats awareness as a finish line. And I'm no exception. A lot of my content talks about realizing that you have a problem, and telling you what it is, because sometimes you just know you're in pain and have no idea why.

But there comes a point where you absorb so much and learn about what is going on underneath, and try to actually put it into action… but it's never enough to get you to cross that finish line.

Awareness is only useful when it becomes the deliberate starting point for transformation, and that's what my channel aims to accomplish for you.

But because some people are painfully unaware of why they're sabotaging themselves, the focus of online education or even offline education in the forms of therapy or coaching are only prepared to bring you to the point of realization.

And if you're already there? If you already know that there's a problem and all you lack is a solution to solve it? Then you're stranded. Because most people think that awareness is the solution.

That if you realize what's wrong, then you're able to work through it. But that wasn't the case for me, and it's not the case for you, either.

Insight does tell you what is happening, yes. And it's why, again, even though I'm saying this, a big part of my channel is about teaching the why and the what.

But skills are the only thing that determine what you can do about it. Understanding the mechanics behind procrastination, perfectionism, avoidance, and every single symptom you're experiencing does nothing to help you tolerate discomfort or uncertainty, regulate emotions, make decisions, or trust yourself to follow through.

For every problem you understand about yourself, stop asking, "What insight am I missing?" and start asking, "What skill does this problem reveal that I haven't developed yet?"

Because then, you have something to actually seek out.

Yes, we are trying to reveal the skills you are lacking underneath the symptom you are experiencing. and yes, that's just another instance of being aware and not capable. But if you unearth exactly what it is you are missing, not just the mechanics of what you were experiencing, then you are equipping yourself to seek out a means of learning that skill.

Whether it's by hand through gritty research like I was forced to (because no one else talked about this piece of healing procrastination online when I was in pain) or finding someone to help you along the way.

This is why most capable people, just like you, stay stuck even with insight. Essentially, the insight is kind of the thing keeping you stuck.

Because insight tells you what's happening. It cannot build the skills to respond differently when the same situation keeps repeating itself and you're presented with the same symptoms. Understanding a problem and overcoming a problem are not the same thing.

But I understand if you're scared of trying to change. Because in the past, when you tried and failed again, you feel like you're worse off than not trying at all.

Why does one missed work out become a month of missed workouts? Why does one unfinished project become another abandoned goal? It's less about the failure itself, and more about what failure creates within you. Because failure produces shame, and shame prevents you from recovering.

That's what we're exploring in the next YouTube video about how shame makes it so difficult to try again. Check it out HERE:

Don’t forget to subscribe if you’re ready to stop letting these patterns control you. And if you’ve heard enough and know that what you need is a path to follow that takes out the guesswork… then book a call HERE.

And as always, stay in this corner of the internet as long as you need.
